TeamMONASH™ Walks for Harmony

Monday 13 July

Yesterday thousands of people, including many representatives from the Monash community joined a 'harmony walk' aimed at reaffirming Victoria’s support for multiculturalism and to send a strong message of Australia being a safe destination for international students.

The resounding message from the event, was that we are made up from many cultures, however we are just the one community.

The Monash representatives proudly followed a tall blue Monash University flag, as held by Masters student Rebecca Lunnon and husband Anto.

Rebecca is studying a Master of International Relations and thought today was important to attend as it highlighted the vibrant multicultural community present in Victoria and Monash.

Rebecca’s husband Anto, who is of Indonesian origin occasionally writes for an English language newspaper based in Jakarta.  Only weeks ago in an article he highlighted the need for an event such as this to bring together 200 plus ethnic communities in Victoria.  Anto was proud to be a part of TeamMONASH and enjoyed carrying the flag with his wife.

There were many people from Monash marching under the flag, although many more, who were representing their own culture were drawn to the TeamMONASH procession as they were Monash students, staff or alumni.

Many Monash staff, past and present students, children and grandparents representing many cultures turned out to represent Monash University. They all proudly wore Monash Univeristy and TeamMONASH apparel. The giant blow up hands and bang-sticks were a hit with the young and the young at heart.

It was great to see so many members of the Monash community come out and support this event, and to prove that Monash, as part of Victoria and the world is made up from many cultures, but is just the one community.

See below for pictures of the walk.
